How we judged
- Opens files you already own (EPUB/PDF at minimum), not only store SKUs
- Offline reading without forcing an account for basic use
- Typography controls that matter on a small screen
- Honest limits on Kindle/store protection
- Whether progress can leave the phone later
We include Fere Reader because we build it — and we say where it is not the best fit.
The apps
1. Fere Reader
Best when: you want one multi-format shelf (EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, TXT) that also exists on Windows and the web, with books staying on the device and optional WebDAV sync.
Watch out: it will not open store-protected Kindle/KFX purchases — no honest third-party app should claim that. iOS availability can lag Android depending on release train; check the current download page.

2. Apple Books
Best when: you live on iPhone/iPad and your files are EPUB or PDF. System integration, continuity and simplicity are the point.
Watch out: not a Windows app; migrating a long Apple-only shelf elsewhere is painful. See Apple Books alternative for Windows if that is your next problem.
3. Google Play Books
Best when: you want a cloud shelf on Android (and the web) and are fine uploading personal documents to Google.
Watch out: privacy and export habits differ from an on-device library. Uploading is convenient; it is also an upload.
4. Kindle app (Android / iOS)
Best when: your library is Amazon purchases and Whispersync matters more than open files.
Watch out: it is not a general EPUB file manager. Sideloaded open formats belong in a different app if you care about leaving Amazon later.
5. Moon+ Reader (Android)
Best when: you want deep Android customization — gestures, formats, OPDS — and do not mind a denser settings surface.
Watch out: iOS is not the home turf; cross-device story is weaker than a true multi-platform product.
6. Lithium and other lightweight FOSS readers (Android)
Best when: you want a calm EPUB reader with almost no chrome.
Watch out: library and sync features are intentionally thin. Fine for one folder of books; weaker as a long-term system of record.

- Mobile “best ebook reader app” ≠ best Windows EPUB reader — different pages on purpose.
- Store apps win for store books; multi-format apps win for files you own.
- Fere Reader is a strong fit for on-device multi-format shelves that also touch desktop.
- No third-party app should promise to open protected Kindle store containers.
